When someone dies
When you lose someone, it can be one of the most difficult and challenging experiences you will face. Our team are here to support and guide you every step of the way, whenever you may need us.
Losing a loved one at home
If your loved one passes away at home, you will firstly need to contact the GP. The GP will visit your loved one and issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) if the death was expected.* This certificate will be forwarded to the registry office, which enables you to register the death. This is usually done within 5 days of the death. The registrar will produce the death certificate and a certificate of cremation/burial (this is also known as a "green form").
Losing a loved one in hospital
If your loved one passes away in hospital, the hospital will usually issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).* The hospital's own bereavement team will be in touch to provide support and guidance. You will be able to make an appointment with the registrar once they have received the MCCD from the hospital. After registration, the registrar will issue the death certificate and the certificate of cremation/burial (also known as the "green form").
Unexpected death
If the death was not expected, the coroner will be contacted. This may delay the funeral. A member of the coroner's office will keep you updated on any investigations.
Please do not hesitate to contact our dedicated and friendly team if you require any further information.
